Spring 2
Is Nature a Gift, a Curse or a Secret?
This term, our learning will be guided by the question “Is Nature a gift, a curse or a secret?” as we explore the beauty, mystery and power of the Welsh landscape. Pupils will learn how Wales’ mountains, lakes, forests and coastlines have inspired myths and legends for generations, shaping our national identity and storytelling traditions.
Our core text will be Welsh Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends by Claire Fayer, which will introduce children to a range of traditional Welsh stories and characters. We will look closely at how these tales connect to real places in Wales and why storytellers often used the natural landscape to explain events, mysteries or moral lessons.
One of our key focuses will be the story of Blodeuwedd, the woman created from flowers. Pupils will explore how this myth links to themes of nature, identity and transformation, as well as its connection to Welsh places and culture. This story will also inspire our Literacy work and serve as the basis for creating detailed character portraits.
In Art, pupils will study and create artwork based on Blodeuwedd, experimenting with colour, pattern and texture to represent her origins in nature. Children will explore how artists use natural shapes and imagery to capture character and emotion.
Throughout the term, pupils will also learn spelling patterns and vocabulary linked to the story, helping them deepen both their language skills and their understanding of the myth’s themes.
Geography will play an important role as pupils study maps and explore the features of the Welsh landscape. They will compare Wales with other landscapes around the world, noticing how geography influences the stories people tell. This will help pupils understand how myths often arise from the natural environment and reflect the history and culture of the communities that create them.
Across the curriculum, children will be encouraged to think critically about our big question: Is nature helpful, harmful or full of mysteries we are still discovering? By the end of the term, pupils will have developed a deeper appreciation for Welsh heritage, storytelling and the natural world around them.
