Autumn 1
Lots of fantastic helpers out in the forest today, working hard to clear weeds and brambles.
Today, the children collected data using tally charts. They explored different categories, such as eye colour and favourite fruit, and recorded their findings using tally marks. Next week, we will use this data to create graphs using J2E. The children will have the opportunity to turn their collected data into clear and colourful graphs.
The children really enjoyed their gymnastics lesson today. They recapped the stationary shapes they had learnt previously and then challenged themselves to use these shapes in the air while performing low jumps. There were lots of fantastic examples of good body lines and control throughout the lesson. Well done, everyone!
Today, in our Welsh lesson, we were learning how to ask the question, “Pryd mae dy ben-blwydd di?” (When is your birthday?). We had lots of fun practising the months of the year, finding our matching partner and practising both the question and answer together. The children did a fantastic job using their Welsh!
Today, we listened to the story Best of All: The Magical Mix That’s You by Smriti Halls. We used the story as a starting point to talk about friendship, kindness and what makes each of us special and unique. We discussed how everyone is different, how our differences make us who we are, and the importance of celebrating and appreciating what makes each person special. We also explored how our words and actions can make others feel happy, valued and included.
After this, everyone was given the name of a classmate and asked to write them a secret message, sharing something they admired about that person. It was lovely to see the children thinking carefully about the positive qualities in others. Receiving a kind message made everyone feel happy and valued.
Our lightbulb project in Llangyfelach church this afternoon. The children had a wonderful time taking part in 4 activities! Thank you to the church for involving in us in such a special project!
We loved listening to the story of Beegu while we were in the Roundhouse. Inspired by the story, we used clay to make little friends for Beegu. We then explored the school grounds, showing our new clay friends the special places where we feel we belong. Finally, we found a secret hiding place and carefully tucked our little friends away, so that Beegu would have a friend too.
Beegu - Alexis Deacon
We’ve really enjoyed reading Beegu by Alexis Deacon and have taken part in lots of fun and creative activities linked to the story.
We drew our own pictures of Beegu and used adjectives to describe what he looks like and what he might be like. We then imagined a new friend for Beegu, drawing and describing our characters. We used a thesaurus to help us find interesting and exciting vocabulary to make our descriptions even better.
We also created story maps and used them to help us retell the story to our friends, developing our speaking, listening and storytelling skills. We then shared our opinions by writing our own book reviews.
One of our favourite activities was listening to Beegu in the Roundhouse, which made the story feel extra special. We also got creative with clay, designing and making our very own little friends for Beegu.
It has been wonderful to see our imaginations, creativity and language skills grow as we explored this lovely story together!
Performing static body shapes in our Gymnastics lesson
Using resources to help us write how we are feeling and why in Welsh
Capital letters and full stops
How we are partitioning numbers to 100
We had a lovely community walk today! 🌿🚶♀️
We enjoyed looking out for lots of different animals and birds along the way. We also wrote down the names of the streets we passed, and this week we’ll be doing some research to discover the English translations of the Welsh street names. 🐦🦆🔎
We finished off our walk with a lovely treat — a visit to the park! 🛝🌳 It was a wonderful way to end a fun and educational afternoon together. 💚
Learning Welsh through play! 🐍🎲 We had lots of fun playing Snakes and Ladders while practising our Welsh vocabulary and developing our counting skills. A great way to learn, play and use our Welsh together!
Using base 10 to develop our understanding of place value, solving problems and explaining our reasoning. A big thank you to Ben for sharing his explanation and helping us with one of our questions.
PE was all about understanding the importance of fitness. We focused on the importance of warming up and cooling down, enjoyed some fun and energetic games, and challenged ourselves with a variety of circuit training activities.
Lots of fantastic work is happening in our Welsh lessons! We’ve been practising asking and answering questions, enjoying lots of fun games, and beginning to write about ourselves in Welsh.
A lovely afternoon in the forest
Getting used to new morning routines 👍🏻
Our Learning This Term – Belonging
Our overall theme this term is Belonging, with our big question:
“How do my choices, values and beliefs make me who I am?”
We are excited to be reading the novel Omar, Accidental Trouble Magnet by Zanib Mian. This funny and heart-warming story follows Omar, a young boy with a wonderful imagination who finds himself in all sorts of hilarious adventures. Alongside plenty of laughs, the story explores important themes including friendship, family, cultural identity, belonging, kindness and helping others.
Omar’s experiences will encourage us to think about what makes us who we are and how our choices, values and beliefs shape our identity. We will explore ideas around morality and world beliefs, as well as thinking about ourselves and our place in the world through Me in My World. We will also consider how we can support one another, show kindness and make sure everyone feels included, valued and that they belong.
Our learning will link across many areas of the Curriculum for Wales. In Being My Best, we will explore aspects of mental health and wellbeing, while through Drawing and Music we will have opportunities to express ourselves creatively and explore our own identities.
We will develop our literacy skills through diary writing, using Omar’s adventures as inspiration for our own writing. In Mathematics, we will be developing our understanding of place value, applying our skills in different contexts. We will also carry out some exciting Science learning, inspired by Omar’s parents and their love of science and experiments.
We will also have a strong focus on Welsh, developing our vocabulary and confidence in communicating in Welsh. We will particularly explore first-person descriptions, using Welsh to describe ourselves, our personalities, interests and experiences. This will give us opportunities to think about how we express our own identities and what makes each of us unique.
Throughout the term, we will be encouraged to make connections between our different areas of learning and, most importantly, to think about who we are, where we belong and how we can help others to feel that they belong too.
