Spring 1
We listened to more fantastic charity presentations today!
Charity Presentations
Around the world, there are many religions and faiths. However, the six main religions are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhism.
Each of these religions encourage kindness to others.
We've been focusing our learning on Islam over the last few weeks and we know that Sadaqah, is the act of voluntarily giving charitable gifts out of kindness or generosity.
We decided to do our own mini research projects on a charity of our choice.
Today, we've enjoyed listening to the above children talk about their chosen charities.
Diolch all
Dancing to celebrate Eid
We learnt about Eid Al-Fitr is and how it is celebrated. We had lots of fun following an Eid Mubarak dance. We then worked in groups to create our own dances. We watched our peers dance and used constructive feedback to improve our performances. We invited Anika from Year 5 to watch our dances and she also gave us feedback.
Anika gave us three targets: position; clear movement; synchronization.
Important lessons from PC Chris
We are really grateful to PC Chris, who came to the classes to teach us today. Year 4 had a lesson called 'Friend or Foe' and the Year 3 lesson was about staying smart online. Two very important messages, especially as it is Safer Internet Day next week!
Robotics Workshop
We built our own LEGO Spike robots and then programmed them using block coding to complete a variety of challenges! Mrs Davies told us that we not only developed our team building and problem-solving skills, but that we also developed our resilience! It was lots of fun!
Ice-cream treat at Joe's
Visit to Swansea Mosque
Creative lesson - Cubism
In our class novel, Omar took part in an art lesson in school. He had to draw a self-portrait in the style of Picasso. So, we wanted to find out who Picasso was and try our own Picasso inspired cubist portraits. They are quite tricky to do! We also developed our paint mixing skills using the three primary colours.
Money, money, money!
Developing our understanding of money: ordering coins by value; counting coins; finding lots of different ways to make a value.
How many different ways can you make 46p?
What is the least amount of coins you can use?
Outdoor Learning - Dydd Santes Dwynwen
We had fun outdoors, learning about Dydd Santes Dwynwen. Following the story, we worked in teams to answer questions that were placed on trees around the school.
Challenge: Can you find Llanddwyn Island on a map of Wales?
Using inverse - Buy 1, get 3 free!!!
World Religion Day - Whole School Assembly
The aim of World Religion Day is to promote understanding and peace between all religions, encouraging people to learn about other faiths and their followers.
Thank you to Eshaan from Year 6, who came to our class to do a presentation about his 'Umrah' with his family last year
We are so grateful to Eshaan from Year 6, for coming to our class to make a wonderful presentation about his 'Umrah' with his brother and parents last year. We all thought it was fantastically presented and we learnt lots of interesting information! We now understand more about Islam, which will help us when we are reading our class novel - Diolch.
We developed our understanding of:
* 5 Pillars of Islam
* Pilgrimage to Mecca: TAWAF - circling ka'aba 7 times; Holy Zamzam water; Walking between Safa and Marwa mountains; HALAQ - shaving your hair
* Interesting Fact - The canopies in Prophets Masjid are the world's biggest convertible roof!
Using inverse to multiply and divide
Following the video, we discussed and answered questions about how we can be a 'good person'
Science outdoors
Omar, the little boy from our class novel likes doing science experiments with his family. They have Science Sundays! One of his experiments was to create a tornado in a bottle, so we thought we’d give it a go!
We had lots of fun doing the ‘Tornado in a Bottle Science Experiment Work’!
When you spin the bottle in a circular motion it creates a water vortex that looks like a tornado. The water spins around the center of the vortex because of centripetal force.
Centripetal force is any force that causes an object (in this case water) to move in a circular path.
We also had fun pretending to be a tornado and passing the ball as quickly as we could around the circle. We timed ourselves and got quicker each time we did it. It pays to practise J
New book, new theme - Everyone Different, Everyone Welcome
We've started reading our new class book, Planet Omar Accidental Trouble Magnet', by Zanib Mian. The blurb was spot on! "Once you open this book you'll laugh so hard that snot will come out of your nose."
The story is rich with discussion points and possible predictions. We are using the story to talk about the different families that live in the UK today and why this makes Britain a great place to live; everyone different, everyone welcome.
Our Criw Cymraeg members from the class have been helping us to ask and answer a set of Welsh questions. Diolch!
Practise asking and answering these questions:
1. Beth ydy dy enw di?
2. Sut wyt ti?
3. Ble wyt ti'n byw?
4. Faint ydy dy oed di?
5 a. Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?
5 b. Sut roedd y tywydd ddoe?
5 c. Sut bydd y tywydd yfory?
6. Beth wyt ti'n hoffi fwyta?
7. Beth wyt ti ddim yn hoffi yfed?
8. Pa liw wyt ti'n hoffi?
9. Beth wyt ti'n wisgo?
10. Ble est ti ar y penwythnos?
Outdoor Learning - New Year Traditions in Wales
Some, Welsh New Year customs are very strange - horses’ skulls, 3am hymn-singing, odd apples, mountain races and seaside swims too!
We had great fun singing 'Blwyddyn Newydd Dda', racing with torches and making a Perllan. Mrs Davies even splashed us with water to wish us luck for the coming year!
Catching up with what our class mascot, Dewi has been up to over the last month - lots of siarad Cymraeg!
Class Assembly - New Year Choices
The assembly has encouraged us to use the start of a new year as a stepping stone towards making good choices in our lives. During reflection time we considered:
* How we want to behave
* How we want to work
* How we want to treat other people.
We understand that the choices we make today affect the future.
